This is how a case is typically handled by the city:
|Resident makes a complaint or the officer observes the violation|
|Complaint is logged and given a case number|
|The officer is assigned the case|
|An inspection is typically conducted within 24 hours|
|If a violation is found, the officer issues a Notice of Violation|
|At the expiration of the Notice of Violation, the property is re-inspected.|
|If the violation remains, further enforcement may result in summons, show cause hearing, abatement or citation|
|In the end, the results benefit the neighborhood.|

Why Do Cities Have Code Enforcement?
Safety is the biggest driver of neighborhood municipal nuisance codes – dead trees, fire hazards, fences in need of repair and other maintenance issues cause health and safety risks. Municipalities pass nuisance codes to help mitigate these risks and create standards. When someone chooses to live in that municipality, they are obligated to follow the codes. Neighborhood Services routinely monitors all neighborhoods, especially for seasonal issues. Property values are affected by appearance, and in our community residents have voiced the need for enforcement.
Residents have expressed the need for robust code enforcement. Our Neighborhood Services team responds to complaints and proactively patrols the city on a daily basis to address code violations. 97% of residents respond to code enforcement notices voluntarily the first time.
