New Rec Center Construction Halfway Done

Construction on the new Northglenn Recreation Center, Senior Center and Theatre is halfway done. The City of Northglenn hosted a “topping out” ceremony to celebrate the occasion on Nov. 12. Members of City Council, Northglenn Urban Renewal Authority board, Northglenn Arts and Humanities Foundation board, Parks and Recreation Advisory board, city staff, and representatives from Architects Barker Rinker Seacat, Construction Manager FCI Constructors Inc. and Project Managers Project One Cumming signed the last structural roofing beam, which will be installed in the near future.

Located just east of Interstate 25 and south of 120th Avenue, the new center is set to open late next year.

“After 15 years of vision, planning and now construction, I can’t believe we’re only one year away from the opening of this amazing facility,” said Northglenn Mayor Meredith Leighty. “As if we needed one more reason for 2021 to get here!”

The new $54.5 million facility will meet the needs and desires of residents and patrons now and for generations to come. Visitors will enjoy swimming, fitness, preschool, arts & culture programming and classes in a first-class facility. Some added features not available in the current center include a running track, leisure pool, slide, indoor preschool play area and senior center outdoor patio. At 87,887 square feet, the new center will be more than twice the size of the current recreation center, which opened in 1975.

“This has taken a monumental cooperative effort between residents, city staff, the Northglenn Urban Renewal Authority, Northglenn Arts & Humanities Foundation, and our building partners,” said Leighty. “They’ve worked long and hard to make sure we will have a facility that patrons will love and that will help our senior, recreation, arts and cultural programs thrive.”

The project broke ground on Oct. 28, 2019. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, construction has not stopped - though health screening and social distancing has been implemented.

The construction of the new recreation center is Phase I of the city’s Civic Center Master Plan. The vision is for a new heart of the city that includes the rec center, an area for city events, a new city hall and private development. For more information on the complete project, go to
