- What kind of trash can am I supposed to use?
Normal trash must be placed in a city-provided polycart.
The only exceptions are curbside recycling of automotive batteries, antifreeze and or/motor oil.
Through the end of 2009, the city will accept bagged green waste (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) placed to the side of the polycart. However, starting Jan. 1, 2010, green waste must be put in a polycart or it will NOT be collected.
Residents can place up to three polycarts out at one time.
Extra polycarts can be purchased from the city by calling 303-450-4004. The city has three sizes available:
- 40 gallons, which holds 150 pounds and costs $45
- 64 gallons, which holds 200 pounds and costs $58
- 96 gallons, which holds 300 pounds and costs $60.
This fee can be charged to your utility bill.
- Why do I have to purchase a polycart from the city?
The city has concerns about equipment compatibility, cart damage and warranties. The polycarts purchased from the city are guaranteed to work with the city's trucks and have a 10-year warranty. Call 303-450-4004 to purchase a polycart.
- Why did the city switch to automated trash collection?
Automated trash collection allows for increased for productivity, which will allow the city to offer residents curbside recycling services once all automated equipment has been purchased, tentatively scheduled for fall 2011.
- How much does it cost for trash pick up?
The monthly fee for trash pick up is $12.25 per month. This includes up to 12 items of trash per week. The fee is added to your utility bill.
- What's a special pick up?
A special pick up is a large item that does not fit in a trash bag or container. You get two free special pick ups a year. Additional special pick ups are $7.50 for up to 10 items. Additional items are subject to additional fees. Special pick ups are collected on your regular trash day. Appliances containing Freon, tires and other items may involve an additional fee. Check with the Operations Division at 303-450-4004.
- What will you pick up on a special pick up?
Things like appliances, furniture, lawnmowers, etc. constitute a special pick up. However, there are items the landfill won't accept, so the city will not pick those up - i.e. hazardous waste, medical waste and propane tanks.
- How do I setup a special pick up?
Just call the Operations Division at 303-450-4004 and give an itemized list of what you would like picked up. Please keep in mind the solid waste crews will only pick up what is on the special pick-up ticket. You must call no later than 2:30 p.m. one business day prior to your collection day.
- How do I get rid of my hazardous waste?
Open a list that will detail where you can bring items that cannot or should not be thrown away. If you have any questions, please call 303-450-4004.
- Does the Operations Division rent roll-offs?
Yes. The roll-offs are $180 for three days; this includes delivery, pick up and disposal. Delivery can be on Mondays with pick up on Thursdays, or delivery on Fridays with pick up on Mondays.
- What if my trash wasn't picked up?
It was probably overweight, not out on time or not properly prepared. The Operations Division has rules and regulations that we ask our residents to follow to allow a safe and efficient service. Make sure your trash is out by 7 a.m. on your trash day. Ensure that cars are not obstructing your trash. Make sure your containers and bags are properly set out and prepared. - How can I dispose of my green waste?
The city accepts all kinds of green waste - clippings, tree branches, leaves, etc. - at its Green Waste Recycling Center (formerly Tree Branch Recycling Center), located at the Maintenance and Operations Facility, 12301 Claude Court. The center is open the second and fourth Saturday of the month April through October and the first Saturday of the month November through March from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is also open every Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proof of residency is required, such as a driver's license and current utility bill. No contractors are allowed. Single axle trailers only. All loads must be covered.
- Does the city of Northglenn have a recycling program?
Yes. On your trash day, the Operations Division will pick up two automotive batteries per week and up to five gallons of motor oil/antifreeze in clear one-gallon containers with your name and address written on the container.
The city of Northglenn also has two drop-off centers for newspapers, plastic Nos. 1-8, aluminum and steel cans and glass bottles and jars. They are located at the Northwest Open Space, 112th Avenue and Ranch Drive, just south of the city's Water Treatment Facility and in the southwest parking lot of City Hall, 11701 Community Center Drive.

- What holidays does the trash service observe?
Trash is not collected on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
If your trash day falls on one of these holidays, your trash will be picked up on the next business day.
- What are are the business hours for the Solid Waste Division?
Office hours for the Operations Division are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

- Does the city have a free landfill day?
Yes, the city had two free landfill days in May and October in 2009. Dates for 2010 will be published as soon as they are known.
