Trash Collection - Automated Trash Pickup

On April 9, 2009, City Council unanimously approved CB-1684, an ordinance authorizing the city to convert from manual to automated trash collection service by Sept. 1. Now, all residential households are required to purchase from the city and use the standardized trash container or polycart for all trash collection.

To assist in the conversion, the city distributed one 96-gallon polycart to each household that didn't have a polycart. Any resident desiring a different size or more polycarts may contact the Operations Division at 303-450-4004 after the polycart is delivered.

Polycarts have hinged lids, large wheels for ease of maneuverability and come with a 10-year warranty against manufacturer’s defects. Polycarts are available in the following sizes, pricing, and weight capacity:
• 96-gallon at $60 and will hold up to 300 pounds
• 64-gallon at $58 and will hold up to 224 pounds
• 48-gallon at $45 and will hold up to 168 pounds

Residents can pay for their polycarts in full or choose to be billed a $5 per month charge on your utility billing statement until the polycart is paid in full.

All existing extra trash services including special pick ups, free landfill days, tree branch recycling, voluntary recycling drop-off centers, limited curbside recycling of automotive batteries, motor oil and antifreeze as well as roll-off rentals remain unchanged.

Through the end of 2009, the city will accept bagged green waste (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) placed to the side of the polycart. However, starting Jan. 1, 2010, green waste must be put in a polycart or it will NOT be collected.

By standardizing containers, the city can make the switch to automated trash collection equipment that utilizes one-person trucks with a mechanical arm to pick up containers. It is anticipated that increased productivity will allow the city to offer residents curbside recycling services once all automated equipment has been purchased, tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2011.

The Operations Division would like to thank all our customers for their support as we make this change to automated service. Ultimately, this change will allow us to minimize operational costs and continue to provide our residents with a range of trash services at the best value possible.

For more information on automated pick up or any trash-related question, or to order your polycart, please call 303-450-4004 weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Pick Up Times

On your normal trash collection day, trash containers can be placed out at 5 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
-
Placement

Polycarts must be placed with the rear wheels in the gutter adjacent to the street or with the handle of the polycart nearest your home. Polycarts should be 6 feet away from parked cars and other obstacles.

If you have more than one polycart, please place them at least 2 feet away from each other.
