Each spring, city crews flush every hydrant along the 110 miles of water mains in Northglenn to remove debris. Small amounts of iron and manganese may temporarily discolor your water during this process, but it poses no health threat. If you notice a rusty tinge to your water, open all your faucets at the same time for a few minutes until the water runs clear. The Public Works Department has a diverse ledger of responsibilities, maintaining and improving the infrastructure of the city, maintaining the quality of water and disposing of solid waste through the Operations Division, Utilities Division and Capital Improvement Projects.

- | | Operations Division
The Operations Division is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the city’s infrastructure that includes: roadway network, water distribution, and wastewater collection systems, and storm drainage system. The division is also responsible for providing additional services that manage the fleet maintenance facility, and solid waste collection for the residential community. Services within the division and their corresponding areas of responsibility include:
- Fleet Services is responsible for the maintenance and replacement of all city vehicles.
- Facilities Maintenance is responsible for repairs and maintenance of all city buildings and structures.
- Street Maintenance includes snow removal, street sweeping, asphalt patching and crack sealing, and curb and gutter maintenance. The Street Maintenance service also includes the installation and repair of stormwater piping and catch basins.
- Solid Waste is responsible for weekly trash collection from residences (excluding apartment complexes and some townhomes). In addition, the division is responsible for providing large item special pick-ups, operating two recycling drop-off locations, and providing weekend tree branch service.
- Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of the city’s water and sewer pipeline network including appurtenant facilities such as vales, service connections, meters, hydrants, and storage tanks.
- Stormwater Management is responsible for administering the city’s stormwater permit and implementing associated programs to reduce the discharge of pollutants into the stormwater collection system.

The Utilities Division is responsible for providing a safe and dependable supply of drinking water, and for the treatment of wastewater that meets environmental and regulatory requirements. Primary functions of the division include operating the city’s water and wastewater treatment plants, maintaining electrical and mechanical facilities of the utility system (i.e. lift stations and booster pumps), and providing laboratory testing services. The division also manages the city’s water supply by participating in external agency activities, securing new water rights and implementing conservation programs.

The Engineering Division is responsible for overall planning, coordinating and implementation of the city’s Capital Improvement Program, as well as other projects which require input or management by a professional engineering staff. The division supports the planning and construction of the city’s streets, storm drainage, water, sewer, water and wastewater treatment plants and parks. Engineering staff also take part in the review and coordination of citywide development-related projects.
