Chief Russell L. Van Houten would like to welcome you to the Northglenn Police Department recruiting and information site.

The city of Northglenn is a suburban community with a population of 35,000 residents located 12 miles north of downtown Denver. Northglenn is a home-rule city with a city council/manager form of government.

The city encompasses 7.5 square miles and was incorporated in 1969. Interstate 25, Colorado’s primary north/south corridor, divides the city geographically. For the most part, Northglenn is made up of single-family homes, apartments, retail shopping areas and a 140-acre industrial park.

The Police Department operates out of City Hall and consists of 64 commissioned officers, two Community Service Officers, 17 non-commissioned support personnel and approximately 20 regular volunteers. The department is divided into two divisions: Patrol and Support.

All new recruits are assigned to the Patrol Division, which is commanded by Cmdr. Jim May. Upon completion of the Field Training and Evaluation Program, officers will be assigned to work for a sergeant on watch 1, 2 or 3. Officers work a 10-hour shift of four days on and three days off. Officers bid by seniority for their shift and days off for one year at a time.

Officers may apply for non-promotional career development assignments when they are interested and qualified. These assignments are from three to five years and are made on a rotational basis. The present assignments include the North Metro Drug Task Force, school resource officer, detective and traffic motorcycle officer. Officers may also apply for specialized collateral assignments. The more popular assignments are the SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiations Unit, Traffic Accident Team, canine officer and field training officer.
