In January 2008, the Northglenn Police Department implemented a restructuring of its Patrol Division into the Operations Division, which is divided into four Neighborhood Service Areas (NSAs), a basic building block of community policing in the City of Northglenn.

The goal of the restructuring is to ensure better police services for Northglenn neighborhoods by providing greater flexibility in neighborhood patrols and by aligning the NSAs more closely with the natural neighborhood boundaries of the city. NSA officers provide first response to all emergencies and traffic accidents, they perform preliminary investigations and provide basic patrol services including traffic enforcement and other community response to needs of the citizens.

The Operations Division is under the command of Commander Jim May.

May received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Metropolitan State College of Denver. May started his law enforcement career with the City of Northglenn in September of 1992. As an officer, he served on the SWAT team, participated as a public information officer, a community relations officer, bicycle officer and a use of force instructor. May was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2001 and promoted to lieutenant commander in 2005. He has been awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a bank robbery attempt, the Life-Saving Medal and two Community Policing Awards. May received the Columbine Ribbon for his involvement with the SWAT team during the Columbine High School shootings in 1999. May also instructs at the Arapahoe Community College Police Academy. He recently graduated from Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.
