National Night Out

If you are interested in running for City Council, the City Clerk's Office provides the official candidate packet containing all the required forms and information required to run for City Council.

If you are elected to office as a member of council, you will be required to serve a four-year term. During that time, you should plan to attend the following:
- Regular and special council meetings
- Council study sessions
- Subcommittee meetings
- Meetings of other boards or agencies, which you may be appointed to as a council representative
- Conferences, seminars, conventions, and workshops for training and discussion
- Socials and other events to promote your municipality
Commencing with the November 2011 regular election, elected officials assume office at the first regular council meeting after the election. This was changed from the first meeting in January after the election after voters approved ballot measures 2A and 2B during the 2008 election.
The candidates in November 2009 will take office at the first regular meeting in January 2010.

Councilmembers are paid an honorarium commensurate with his or her present salary. The mayor receives an additional 40 percent and the Mayor Pro Tem receives an additional 15 percent. The current council honorarium is $575 per month.

If you are willing to accept the challenges and demands of elected office, the next step is to pick up a candidate packet from the City Clerk's Office.
Nomination petitions may be circulated and signed beginning on the 91st day and ending on the 71st day prior to the day of election. Any signatures obtained outside of this time period invalidate the petition. Councilmember candidates must obtain 25 signatures from registered electors within their specific ward. Most candidates try to get more signatures than needed in case some are ruled invalid.
The city clerk will provide you with a nomination petition and other necessary forms.
Once you declare yourself a candidate, you must complete a candidate affidavit within 10 days of announcing your candidacy.
