| cross-connection control and backflow prevention information for businesses |
Your Responsibilities as a Business Owner
As part of the City's Cross-Connection Control program, the City conducts periodic inspections of commercial properties. During the inspection, we are looking for potential risks to the water distribution system. If the plumbing system inside your building was built to code, these risks will be well managed already.
If we find an unprotected cross-connection, we will require that you either eliminate it or protect it through the use of an approved backflow preventer.
Tests for Backflow Preventers
Backflow preventers are mechanical devices with moving parts that wear down, get dirty, and sometimes just break. To make sure that a backflow preventer is working properly, each assembly must be tested each year by a trained technician. This test may reveal vandalism to the assembly, or show that internal parts need to be cleaned or replaced.
Perhaps you've received one of our retest notices in the mail. The City of Northglenn requires that all commercially owned backflow preventers be tested once a year by a certified technician. The City sends out reminder letters approximatley two weeks before testing is required. Once tested, the contractor will send us a copy of the test report. We will let you know if we do not receive the report.
A list of contractors should have been included with the retest notice. The contractors on the list have voluntarily submitted their credentials to the City of Northglenn. Credentials include their certification information, insurance coverage, and equipement calibration reports. Northglenn does not endorse these contractors in any way. This list is by no means all inclusive, and you will find more cross-connection control technicians in the yellow pages.
