frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. What is the process once a Code Enforcement officer issues a courtesy notice?
Once you receive a notice, you must either comply with the notice or contact the officer to discuss any concerns you have with the notice or your ability to correct the issue. If you comply or correct the problem, the case will be closed. If you do not comply, a citation may be served or an abatement process started.

2. The courtesy notice talks about abating my property. What does that mean?
When a courtesy notice is issued to a property and the items in the notice are not corrected, the City can perform an abatement. Abatement occurs when the City hires someone to fix the code violation for you and then a lien is filed on the property for the cost of the correction.

3. When will you abate my property?
Abatements are only done if the violation is not corrected and the code officer has not been contacted by the due date written on the notice. If the notice is ignored, abatements can be done as soon as the first day after the due date. We are always willing to try to work with citizens who contact Code Enforcement and provide a reasonable time frame to complete the work.

4. What if I will not be able to get all the work finished by the due date on the notice?
Contact the Code Enforcement Officer as soon as you know that you cannot complete the work by the required date or that the date is not feasible. Do not wait until the due date to contact the code enforcement officer. All code officers are willing to make reasonable accommodations. If this is your first offense, a “reasonable” time frame can be longer than if we had notified you in the past two years of similar violations.

5. What if circumstances such as health, finances, etc. prohibit me from complying with the notice?
Please contact the Code Enforcement Officer immediately. They may be able to offer assistance programs. Keep in mind that certain criteria must be met to qualify for this option. The City’s goal is to work in partnership with citizens to “Keep Northglenn Beautiful.”

6. What do I do if I disagree with the notice?
Contact the Code Enforcement Officer immediately. They will be glad to meet with you and clarify exactly why the notice was issued.

7. I keep trying to reach the code officer who issued the notice and cannot get in touch with him/her. What do I do?
Code Enforcement officers are located at 12301 Claude Ct, which is the City’s Maintenance & Operation building not at city hall. Since we spend most of our time in the community, contacting us can be difficult. You may call our police dispatch center at 303-288-1535 and they will get your message to us.

8. Why did I get a courtesy notice when my yard looks great and I see other homes that do not?
Please remember that a notice does not mean your home looks bad. Homes homes can receive notices for violations such as overhanging trees, trash cans not covered, etc. These situations can pose safety hazards and therefore we must enforce them regardless of the condition of the home and yard.

9. Why is Northglenn enforcing codes now when I've been living here for years and no one ever said anything?
The nicer the neighborhoods are maintained, the greater the value of the homes. In addition, statistics have proven that when code is enforced, crime rates are lower. We want to help keep your neighborhood safe and increase the value of your home.

10. What happens if I get a citation?
If you receive a citation, you will need to pay the fine and correct the issues within 15 days of the date on the citation. If the issues are not corrected within the 15 days, a second citation will be issued giving a second fine and 15 more days to comply. Citations may continue to be served until the issues are corrected.

11. What is an illegal vehicle?
An illegal vehicle is a vehicle that does not have license plates or the license plates are expired. Also, vehicles that are wrecked, dismantled, and inoperable are considered to be an illegal vehicle. Illegal vehicles cannot be parked on City streets or parked on your property within the public’s view. Illegal vehicles must be store in an enclosed building or must be screened on all sides by a six-foot opaque fence and parked on an approved surface. No more then three illegal vehicles can be stored behind a fence.

12. How does my yard need to be maintained?
All front, side, and rear yards must be landscaped and maintained substantially weed free.
Grass areas also should be maintained or mowed so the grass does not reach 8” in height. Landscaping can be any combination of living and non-living ground cover. This includes grass, rock, mulch, bushes, trees, flowers, cement areas, gazebos etc...

13. What is considered litter?
Items that are not designed or intended for outside use cannot be stored outside a home or building. Storing items such as car parts, construction material that is not being used, boxes, newspapers, household trash, appliances, indoor furniture, wood, tree cuttings, tires, chemicals, carpet, mattresses, etc. outside on the property is not allowed.
